Kempegowda International Airport is the primary serving airport of Bangalore and is also known as Bangalore Airport. The airport serves around 15 million passengers yearly. It is the 3rd busiest airport in the city, and its address is located about 35 km north of the city near Devanahalli. The grand airport is spread over 4000 acres (1,600 ha) and is owned by BIAL. BIAL is Bengaluru International Airport Limited, which is a public consortium.
The airport was opened and started operating on 24th May 2008 as an alternative to HAL Airport. Earlier, the HAL airport was the sole serving airport of the city, but later, the population congestion started to rise. In 1942, HAL began operating for military and defense purposes. Later, in the 1970s, its operation changed to domestic and commercial purposes for the 1st time. As more people started flying to the city, HAL Airport could not handle the increased traffic. It had only one runway and limited space for parking planes. It had room for just six aircrafts and no space to expand further.
The airport is owned by Bangalore International Aiport Limited, which also sees to the operation of the airport. It is a public and private limited company and has received the right to operate the airport for the next 30 years from the govt.

Terminal 2 is also known as 'Garden Terminal' and was started on 11th Nov 2022. It is built to handle the growing number of passengers and serves both domestic and international flights. T2 is designed with lots of greenery and natural light, including indoor gardens, to create a calm and relaxing environment.
